This Just In

chaco-wool-waterproof-nurlsThe Claim: Chaco launched a line of winter boots and cold-weather shoes for men, women, and children this fall. The brand promises the LUVSEAT footbed delivers the same comfort and fit that earned Chaco sandals a fanatical following. (You can easily recognize such devotees by their strappy tan lines.)

The Trial: The Arbora Wool Waterproof Nurl boots arrived at the office in September. Weekend jaunts to higher elevations, and early season snow in Boulder provided ample opportunity to test them on ice, snow, and slush.

The Verdict: I wore the Nurls regularly on fall days with temps in the mid-50s—weather I’d normally attempt to stretch sandal season in. Why? They look and feel too good too leave in the closet. Credit the arch support in the footbeds that helps prevent my pronation. Then the snow came. The waterproof uppers kept my feet dry when I was shoveling the driveway or digging out my car. The pigskin and wool lining mean I stay warm whether I’m wearing ski socks or just tights. They’re fully winter ready, too: Vibram Icetrek outsoles keep you upright on slick surfaces. I found myself driving less to trek along slippery sidewalks and snowy paths in town. $200; chacos.com  —Olivia Dwyer
