The Ultimate Fall Jacket

marmot-romThe Claim: No high-tech allusions here: ROM stands for Range of Motion, not computer jargon. Marmot says the combination of its permeable M2 softshell under the arms and Gore-Tex’s Windstopper material on the chest, shoulders, and back, creates a jacket that is breathable, windproof, and water resistant.

The Trial: The ROM has been my constant companion for hiking, camping, and climbing this summer and fall. I’ve worn it on 14er summits, around the campfire, on shadowy multi-pitch climbs, and in fresh snow at 12,000 feet.

The Verdict: The softshell breathes enough to be comfortable when I’m moving on exposed alpine routes or going uphill in brisk early-morning fall temps at lower elevations. And as advertised, when I reach and stretch, the hem stays put. It’s not a fully waterproof piece, so you’ll have to pack or plan accordingly. The pockets handle a cache of energy bars, gloves, sunglasses, and sunscreen, all accessible while wearing a harness and pack. I’ll use this in every season, since the ROM easily fits over my climbing helmet and it’s snug on a ski helmet. On top of all that, the color draws compliments on the trail and at the bar. What’s not to love? $185; marmot.com  —Olivia Dwyer
