Reel Rock Film Tour 7

It’s fall, and that means it’s time for the Reel Rock Film Tour’s seventh annual cinematic jaunt through the vertical world. Last Thursday, we sat with 1,300 climbing fans in Boulder’s Chatauqua Auditorium to see the latest from Sender Films, Big Up Productions, and other climbing filmmakers. Our advice? Check the tour schedule for a show near you right now, and then start working on your handstands for a good shot at winning gear swag during intermission. A breakdown of this year’s films, with video excerpts:

La Dura Dura. Sport climbing legend Chris Sharma teams with up-and-coming 19-year-old Adam Ondra to climb—or compete?—on an impossibly hard route in Spain. Both put forth a spectacular effort on the rock, but it’s the witty editing contrasting Sharma’s rock-star status with Ondra’s quirky teenager qualities that makes this a must-see.

The Shark’s Fin. Alpinist Conrad Anker leads Renan Ozturk and Jimmy Chin in a second attempt on the Shark’s Fin, a route on the northwest face of India’s Mount Meru (20,700 feet). It’s a vertical sufferfest, complicated by each climber’s history: Anker wants to summit for his deceased mentor, Ozturk returns after rehabbing a broken neck, and Chin vowed he’d never come back after the first attempt ended in serious frostbite. By Camp 4 Collective.

Wide Boyz. Off-width crack climbing draws unique characters: A blonde bombshell who’s the American queen, a grizzled vet in his 60s, and more, all sporting scars from battling the cracks with knees, fist, head, chin—whatever works. And two young British climbers who spent years training in a basement and arrive in the U.S. ready to claim first ascents. By Hot Aches Productions and Alstrin Films.

Honnold 3.0. Alex Honnold attended the Boulder screening, signing posters throughout the night. Knowing he’s alive and well doesn’t lessen the impact of this film, which follows the free solo climber (read: no ropes, no protection) from his training on impossible bouldering problems to setting records on Yosemite link-ups.
