Hoka One One Challenger ATR2

Sometimes you have to slap pavement to get to the trailhead.

Hoka made its name on monster midsole cushioning. Yet the Challenger ATR still needed improving. The newly tweaked model reaps the benefits, with a beefier insole that stays in place while you run. A closed-mesh upper secured our feet enough to feel in control while running on off-camber terrain. And this shoe makes running on pavement feel like dashing down trail. All that cushioning—though it’s not as pillowy as you’d think—softens the blow of each step, making this a great town-to-trail shoe. Swami gripe: Can feel tippy on uneven surfaces. Swami like: This shoe softens aches and pains. 9.5 oz. (men’s), 7.8 oz. (women’s)
