Women’s Skis 2015 Winner: Salomon Stella

Salomon Stella Review

<big mountain>

#1 Salomon Stella

Heading to Jackson, Taos, or Whistler? You need a big mountain ski with ample girth underfoot to float in powder, but enough guts for stability on 3,000-vertical-foot groomers. But big mountain skis don’t have to be heavy planks anymore. With the Stella (103mm underfoot), Salomon cut 80 grams from each ski with light but strong Koroyd inserts in the rockered tip and tail. The inserts help center the ski’s mass beneath you for easy handling. Taper—that pin-shaped tip and tail—also pulls the Stella’s widest points toward the skier so the skis don’t feel hooky in deep snow. Swami gripe: Had to force it into fall line turns on groomers. Swami like: The big radius sidecut plows through breakable crust. 130/103/122; $700; salomon.com
