Overview: Built by hand in 1920, the Knickerbocker Mansion is the largest vertical log cabin west of the Mississippi. The private family home now operates as a bed and breakfast and sits on the edge of Forest Service land. Located 10 minutes from skiing at Bear Mountain, the mansion is also an easy walk to the town of Big Bear Lake’s shops and restaurants.
Notable: The mansion’s five rooms have a veranda with lake views, private baths, and original 1920s cedar wood paneling, ceilings, and doors. The old barn was fully renovated and currently functions as the Carriage House, with standard rooms ideal for weekenders on a budget.
Stay Here If: You want peace and quiet without skimping on personal service.
Information: Winter rates start at $135 for standard rooms in the Carriage House and up to $300 for suites in the Mansion. knickerbockermansion.com —Monica Prelle
