Just beyond the resort boundaries at Whistler Blackcomb—North America's biggest ski area—lie miles and kilometers[sic] of high-alpine, glaciated terrain. Both guide service and clinic, The Whistler Alpine Guides Bureau works with many first-time backcountry skiers and boarders to teach them backcountry skills. Their Beyond the Lifts program takes you out a backcountry gate where groups of up to six, ski three to five runs with up to 5,000 vertical feet of skiing for the day. Fitness is key since you'll skin back up after almost every run. More experienced skiers looking for an extended backcountry trip should try the Spearhead Traverse, a four-day trip from Whistler to Blackcomb that spans 13 glaciers.
