Overview: The historic rap on Squaw Valley is it's a premier mountain with minimal upscale lodging. Enter the Resort at Squaw Creek, a ski-in/ski-out, 405-room luxury hotel a short distance from the base village. The hotel recently underwent a $53 million renovation to add fireplaces and kitchens to rooms, providing a modern residential feel.
Notable: Sure we came to ski, but the ice rink and Nordic trails offer an alternative for non-skiers in the family. Loosen those quads with a spa treatment or laps in the steamy outdoor pool, then enlist the resort's babysitters and enjoy some veal osso buco and a California Zin at Six Peaks Grille.
Our Take: Cushy for sure, the hotel is ideally located for hard chargers. The Squaw Creek lift located off the back patio is among Squaw Valley's least used. On a powder day, retrieve your skis from the concierge and work the trees behind the hotel in virtual solitude.
Stay Here If: You're tired of clichéd rustic, mountain-log construction and desire a pampered stay worthy of Squaw's epic terrain.
Information: Rooms from $249 to $2,100 (for the multi-level penthouse suite). squawcreek.com
