The Claim: Scape sunblock lotion offers more UVA and UVB protection than any other sunblock, and it's an amazing five times as waterproof and sweatproof. Credit goes to Dr. Nic Martens, a biochemist, triathlete, and snowboarder, who spent 13 years developing product for Neutrogena before going though 50 formulations and finding the right mix for Scape. They have the science to back up their claims on their site.
The Trial: I applied the sunblock while ski touring in the spring and riding bikes all summer. I also threw it on the kids before letting them terrorize the public pools.
The Verdict: Outdoorsy magazine editors get pitched on all manner of sunblocks on a near-constant basis. Despite earnest attempts to produce natural products or something that performs better, most of the stuff is bunk and comes off with the first glow of sweat. That's not the case with Scape. Reapplying is a nonissue unless you're out for more than six hours. It also smells nice, in a vague, citrus kind of way. Lotion: $14; Face Stick: $10; Lip Balm: $3.50; scapelabs.com
