For a shoe that looks wickedly rugged, the heavily lugged Icebug runs surprisingly smooth on pavement and mellow dirt trails. Testers loved its secure heel cup and just-right arch support paired with a roomy toe box. The lugs bit in both dry dirt and mud, and though we could feel them on pavement, they didn’t hinder us on smooth surfaces. The somewhat stiff upper proved protective when running through overgrown singletrack. And the scant weight and secure fit had a tester raving, “I comfortably skipped around puddles and rocks with no concern of losing balance.” Swami gripe: Too little cushioning for some. Swami like: Same cushion is plenty for others. 10.2 oz. (men’s), 8.8 oz. (women’s)

Sometimes you have to slap pavement to get to the trailhead.
