For Right Coasters looking for mechanized backcountry, there's Sugarbush's April Cabin Cat—the only cat-skiing operation in New England. Once the lift's stop turning on Mount Ellen, the resort fires up its cat for spring skiing for the month of April until the snow's gone. "You can tell the cat to take you wherever you want," says guide and chief recreation officer John Egan. "But we'll steer you where it's best when it's corn o'clock." You'll get about 400 to 500 feet of vertical with each run, since the best snow is at the top of the mountain. Egan's specializes in arctic guiding including Greenland and Siberia, so you can trust him to show you the goods.
