The Best Tweener (And Beyond) Skis 2017

Gear up, Junior.

Tweener Skis 2017

Skier Jake Peruzzi Location Goblin Gully, Gad Valley, Snowbird, UT

Völkl Mantra JR

Whether it’s a freeskiing ski for a race kid, or a daily driver for a young all mountain ripper, the Mantra JR suits all needs. It’s 86mm underfoot and paired with full rocker, which lets you float it on most resort powder days. But a full wood core, vertical sidewalls, and a Völkl quality build also allows you to tip it on edge and rip nice turns. Swami gripe: You might want some camber underfoot if you ski a lot of hardpack. Swami like: “Quick response time, nice carve, and great in bumps,” said a tester. Dimensions: 118/86/111

Armada ARW 84

This Tweener sized (142cm to 177cm) all mountain Armada sports similar dimensions as the Völkl Mantra JR., but the two ski far differently. Here, full traditional camber and a “Pop-Light” wood core combine for a ski that carves groomed snow with nice energy return, but also gives you some extra zip off small hits. Swami gripe: Not as floaty in powder as Armada’s fatter youth offerings. Swami like: Kids beat on skis, which is why we like the heavy-duty “Impact Edges” on the ARV 84. Dimensions: 120/84/109

Dynastar Powertrack 84

No, the Powertrack 84 is not a Tweener ski, but knowing when to transition from youth skis to adult models is vital to improvement. If your lad or lass is actively bending their current ski deep in the turn, edging through the tail, and approaching your cruising speeds on groomers, it’s time. (Unless said lad or lass is a bantamweight; then hold off till they can flex an adult ski). The extra mass and fully featured layup of the Powertrack 84 kept our tweener-aged testers better locked into turns and more stable at speeds. Swami gripe: Adult skis can feel heavy at first, but usually that’s just when they’re carrying them. Swami like: Dynastar’s five-point sidecut makes the Powertrack a frontside/backside ski. Dimensions: 123/84/106
