Overview: When you see a chairlift whisking skiers directly from downtown, it’s easy to assume the slopes above cater to beginners. But take a gander at the trail map before you suit up a bunch of first-timers. The number of green runs on Aspen Mountain is z-e-r-o.
What’s New: Absent big changes in infrastructure or terrain, Aspen directs its attention to advocating climate change activism. The resort-wide “Give a Flake” campaign gives skiers tools, like pre-paid postcards, to pressure senators to act on climate change.
Local’s Take: By night, Mikey Wechsler slings Elk Bolognese Pappardelle at the Red Onion. By day, he burns laps off the Silver Queen Gondola—as in every day the resort has operated since 2011. “This place is the center of the universe for me,” he says. “It’s one of those mountains that skis a lot bigger than it really is.” —M.M. | photo Jesse Hoffman
